Probate can be a lengthy and expensive process. Avoiding probate means that your assets will be transferred to your heirs directly and quickly without the need of a will.  The Nolo book describes in detail how to use various methods which allow you to avoid probate. The methods sound fairly simple. Naming a contingent beneficiary is usually a good idea.
